Bestiality, mothers molesting mutated men and hot boiling baby gravy— fall just wouldn’t be the same without “American Horror Story.” With each new season, producers/creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk push the television horror genre envelope, and the newest season, “Coven,” is no exception.

Previous seasons have taken us on macabre journeys through a haunted house and an insane asylum, but this season we’re in New Orleans following a coven of modern-day witches at Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. But this isn’t your typical gather-round-the-cauldron group of witches toting wands or flying brooms. Each of them possesses a special gift and is under the tutelage of headmistress Cordelia Foxx (an excellent Paulson) and, to some degree, Supreme witch Fiona Goode (a fierce Lange).

In true “American Horror Story” fashion, “Coven” interweaves the past with the present in a spine-tingling narrative that impels you to take an introspective look at the way you view life, death, good, evil and even race and power (and that’s just from the first three episodes).

“Coven” is sure to capture the attention of any viewer with an interest in great, mystical storytelling and will enchant you in a way that causes you to put yourself in the characters’ shoes, making you feel as though you are a resident at Miss Robichaux’s. So get ready to embark on a wild and bloody journey as the season continues.

“American Horror Story: Coven” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on FX.
