The university found itself battling negative publicity on its Facebook page Saturday night after it posted a photo of McConnell Tower lit green in support of those killed in Paris. The problem, people commenting wrote, is the gesture was in poor taste because it combined the memorial with an announcement of a North Texas volleyball victory.

The UNT Facebook page featured a post of McConnel Tower, in which the university said the tower was lit green to express solidarity for those lost  in Paris and to celebrate the UNT athletics victory.

But people commenting on the post, also tweeted on the @UNTSocial account, said the UNT had exploited the tragedy because the university lights the tower each night there is a UNT victory, regardless if 129 people in Paris are killed in an apparent coordinated terror attack.

“Okay PR Team, let’s get this together,” Loren Daniel Bolton wrote. “Mistake number one was lighting a tower that usually signifies victory, to show solidarity and support to a massacre.”

The university edited the original post to clarify it had originally planned to light the tower Saturday night, with or without a UNT victory, to join the world in mourning the attacks which President Obama called “an attack on the civilized world.”

Of the more than 130 comments on the post, UNT accounted for several, as officials continuously responded to upset Facebook users in order to manage its brand perception among the commenters.

“The plan was to light the tower green tonight to show support for France,” UNT wrote. “But when the volleyball team won, we wanted the community to know that it was not just about the win.”
