‘Unsane’ follows Sawyer Valentini as she is involuntarily admitted to a mental institution where she begins to descend into a spiral of fear and madness when she begins to think her longtime stalker has followed her there. But is her delusion clouding her better judgement?

Director Steven Soderbergh has thankfully come out of his alleged retirement and has now treated us to two wildly different genre delights. Following his comedy/crime caper, ‘Logan Lucky’ last year, Soderbergh is back again with a searing tale of mental illness and paranoia completely unleashing his inner B-movie maestro. This is the Soderbergh I love and the one I never knew I always needed.

Soderbergh filmed this whole movie on his own iPhone 7 plus with a variety of different lenses and for being such an ambitious and different approach to filmmaking, he certainly made it work and we must applaud him for trying something new. Other filmmakers in the past have tried this same approach with their films with less than considerable results, but with the subject matterand plot of ‘Unsane’, it only helps to boost the overall film. It puts a kind of documentary style twist to the film which in turn makes it even more effective and disturbing than it already is.

Claire Foy from ‘The Crown’ fame headlines the film and her performance is a ferocious and demanding one steadily unfurling as the film progresses like the jaws of a spider readying for its attack. Foy gets under your skin the moment you begin to question her overall sanity and she does not let up throughout the duration of the film. She is a delight to watch but do not be fooled by her pretty face, she is a force to be reckoned with.

The first act may be a bit too slow and sometimes the camera movements are really jarring, but it is all for good effect. Once the film gets going, it will not let you go until long after the credits have rolled. The final act is something of a waking nightmare, completely doing a 180 turn from its slow start. I was on the very edge of my seat watching the uncomfortable events transpire.

‘Unsane’ is certainly an unconventional approach to filmmaking, but it works a large majority of the time. The many twists and turns, the directing and the brilliant central performance from Claire Foy are more than enough to compensate for its slow beginning.
