The UNT Board of Regents will meet at 9 a.m. tomorrow in the Winspear Performance Hall to approve tenure recommendations and have President V. Lane Rawlins present the UNT Athletics Strategic Plan.

Although at the previous meeting V. Lane Rawlins delivered a proposal to raise tuition by 4.5 percent each year for the next four years, the Board of Regents will not discuss the increase, according to the agenda for the meeting.

The board will also consider several proposals by the UNT Health Science Center, such as expanding clinical space and allowing the center to provide various medical services to Tarrant County.

The plan included a new rate that would have incoming freshman pay $262 more per hour for their first year, and $440 less per hour by the end of their undergraduate career.

Rawlins said this is because of a decrease in state funding as part of UNT’s revenue, which decreased from 40.5 percent of UNT’s revenue in 2002 to 21.6 percent in 2012.

“It almost has to go up, because the state keeps withdrawing funds,” he said. “If you want a quality education, it has to come from somewhere.”

Smatresk will officially take over for Rawlins on Feb. 2. He was previously the president of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

“I think we’re very fortunate to get a person with such experience and also someone who loves Texas,” Rawlins said. “Everybody who has worked with him everywhere likes him. I think he’s the man for us.”
