The UNT club ice hockey team had its suspension reduced on Friday following an appeal to UNT Rec Sports.

One week ago, the club announced it had been suspended for an entire year following a probation violation and would not be allowed to practice or play until the fall of 2016.

The decision on Friday reduced the suspension to Jan. 1, 2016, and allows the club to begin practicing immediately. It just may not play a game until the start of the new year.

Club President Garrett Nall confirmed the appealed decision in a phone interview Friday evening.

“Obviously, we’re very happy by the outcome today,” Nall said. “I think the reduction in our suspension was fair. I think everyone thought being suspended for an entire year was kind of harsh.”

The appeal was conducted by the Executive Club Sports Committee, which is comprised of mainly upperclassman and graduate students.

Nall was informed of the decision Friday by UNT assistant director of intramural sports Britton Sherry, although the actual appeal was held two days earlier on Wednesday.

“A few days after we got the suspension, I realized I wanted to appeal it,” Nall said. “I submitted an official appeal form through rec sports. After that, it was a pretty straightforward process. We just went in an presented our case.”

Nall said he attempted to get the entire suspension lifted, but was pleased with the outcome and happy to get back on the ice.

“There wasn’t any sympathy or pity about it,” Nall said. “Nobody took sides, it was all very fair. I’m happy we can start practicing and given our situation, I think we all consider this a victory.”
