The UNT Student Health and Wellness Center in Chestnut Hall is open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays. It is closed all weekend.

UNT students go to night and weekend classes, and some work a part-time job. If they need treatment for a condition and they don’t get off work or out of class until 9 p.m., they must go elsewhere.

Yet in the last fiscal year, one out of every three students, totaling about 12,000, used services at the SHWC, said Kerry Stanhope, assistant director at the SHWC.

Stanhope said the Wellness Center surveys students every semester to gauge their opinions about convenient appointment times. He said the surveys found that most students want to make appointments from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We’ve reached out specifically to the grad student population because most of their classes are night classes,” Stanhope said. “Surveys indicate they want to be seen during daytime hours.”

The SHWC previously offered a Saturday clinic, but it was later canceled due to low turnout, Stanhope said. He said the center does not have the means to cater to every student on every schedule.

“We have finite resources, but we try our best to accommodate the majority of students that we can,” he said.

Student experiences at the SHWC are mixed. Logistics and supply chain management senior Justin Devine said he had a positive experience at the Student Health and Wellness Center.

“I feel that they’re out there trying to get people to step in,” Devine said. “It was more than reasonable for me.”

Sociology senior Sean Chaney said he turned to the SHWC for treatment of a sprained ankle.

“My experience, personally, was OK,” Chaney said. “There was a long wait but they were very nice people they attended what they needed to.”

However, pre-communication design sophomore Rachel Houghton, said she believes the center should offer more appointment times.

“If I have something I need to take care of within a day or two, it took a week to get to an appointment,” she said.

If students find that they are in need of medical services, Stanhope said there is a free 24-hour nurse line they can call for medical advice and recommendations. Minor Emergency of Denton, CareNow and Denton Regional Hospital are a few of the clinics the SHWC refers students to after hours.

Additionally, the Wellness Center offers online scheduling for student convenience, Stanhope said. He recommends coming in first thing in the morning for urgent matters, as spots reserved for urgent situations typically fill by 9 a.m.

Stanhope acknowledges that there are students who are unable to make an appointment between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

“We see an increase in the need for more appointment slots,” he said. “We’re doing what we can with the resources we have.”
