UNT will be holding a barbecue event today at the Library Mall beginning at noon to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the new University Union.

University Union director Zane Reif said that this will be a good opportunity to not only commemorate the groundbreaking but also to inform students about the construction phases that will be taking place throughout building.

“We’re trying to make sure that we do these little celebrations throughout the project so students can get excited about the new union,” Reif said. “This is an opportunity for us to educate students about what’s going on.”

The event will feature free barbecue and entertainment such as live music and free t-shirt giveaways, according to Special Events Assistant Shirley Agustin.

“The cheerleaders and pep band will be there as well as Scrappy,” Agustin said. “There will also be a message from the Mean Green football team.”

President V. Lane Rawlins and Student Government Association President Zach Brown will also speak to students. Invitations were also sent out to various senators, House of Representatives members and Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs.

Undecided freshman Mahalia Agyepong said that she would like to attend the event, and she said she is excited to see the new union completed.

“I’m a first year freshman, so I like to be a part of anything that happens,” Agyepong said. “I didn’t see the school before the new union building so it’s nice to see it afterward.”

Education senior Margarita Johnson said that she will be attending the event, even though she will not be around when the new union will officially be open.

“It’s good, but not good for me because I’ll be finished by spring 2014,” Johnson said. “I might just come just for the ceremony.”

Reif said that after the ceremony, the next step is to get everything relocated from the old union to Stovall Hall – which is now known as the Stovall Temporary Union Building – by early to mid-October.

The new union is projected to officially open in August 2015.
