The Mean Green finished its weekend strong, taking first and third place in doubles and three singles wins against the University of Minnesota.

Although the team started the weekend off struggling to find a win against Texas A&M University, all the women who were defeated on the first day came back the second day to win. Head coach Sujay Lama said he is extremely proud of the team.

“There were so many positives this weekend,” Lama said. “The way we are comparing and competing is great and our chemistry is awesome.”

In day one doubles against TAMU, UNT seniors Valentina Starkova and Barbora Vykydalova defeated the Aggie duo, senior Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and freshman Maria Paula Deheza, 8-6.

“Texas A&M had an amazing start,” Vykydalova said. “But if I had to grade our team, I would give us an A-plus. We played good tennis.”

UNT freshman Dané Joubert and senior Ilona Serchenko handed a loss to TAMU seniors Wen Sun and Nazari Ubrina, 8-5, giving the Mean Green two wins in doubles on day one at the George P. Mitchell tennis center.

“After this weekend, I can say we are good in doubles,” Vykydalova said. “At first I didn’t believe I could win, but I saw everyone fighting so I started to fight harder. I wanted to win for the team.”

Day two added five more wins to the UNT record. Sophomore Kseniya Bardabush and sophomore Franziska Sprinkmeyer took first place in doubles while Joubert and Serchenko took third.

“Against TAMU we played freer,” Lama said. “And then against MU, a team on our level, we played with a little more control and fight.”

Bardabush, Starkova and Vykydalova took the wins in singles as well.

“This weekend was very competitive,” Sprinkmeyer said. “Saturday we started off nervous, but Sunday against UM was different. We knew UM had hard matches the day before so we used that. Our energy stayed high all weekend.”

The team will play its first home matches of the season against Old Dominion University and Lamar University on Saturday and Sunday.
