A volunteer program initiated by UNT has grown beyond expectations and has helped the city of Denison increase its volunteer opportunities to improve the city’s well-being.

UNT alumnus Gabe Reaume, who is the Denison development services director, saw an opportunity fall 2015 to help the citizens of Denison. So he reached out to Dr. Lisa Dicke, who works with master’s of public administration students at UNT.

Soon after being approached, Dicke decided to dive right in. She and her students brought the spirit of volunteerism straight to the classroom. From the beginning, the hope was to enhance the community’s ability to inform and subsequently fill volunteer spots.

“Dr. Dicke built this whole idea into her coursework, actually allowing students to earn credit hours for their work,” Reaume said. “It’s really been amazing to see the impact.”

The students began by approaching businesses, churches, community colleges, other students and local residents, looking for  community support in order to launch the project. They were  successful in their efforts, and found they had sparked more than just the interest of residents and local businesses.

“The group I was in focused on developing a workable database for nonprofits, schools and churches, that would be easy to update and edit,” MPA student Sena Nyaku said.

With the new database complete, the students are using the insights from the data to boost housing quality in the city.

That part of the project is now finished, and because of it, we have a good, reliable database to tap into,” Reaume said. “We are now using the system to contact groups interested in helping the community and to set up volunteer opportunities.”

Reaume’s hope for the project to expand to other areas in need is coming to fruition, he said.
