Senior defender Kelsey Hodges is looking to end her soccer career at UNT with a bang, and the rest of the conference is expecting it as well.

Hodges was named Conference USA Player to Watch for 2013. She also expects to improve her rankings in the school. She currently has 24 career goals, two shy of top 10 in school history, and her six game-winning goal record is one away from the top 10 as well.

While Hodges is glad she is being recognized by the conference on her abilities, she still has her mind focused on an overall better season for the team.

“I was not expecting that, so it’s a good feeling,” Hodges said. “Going into my senior season, I want it to be a special season with these girls and my team and my senior class, so I think it’s going to be a good year.”

Hodges is a local-grown talent, — she attended Denton Guyer High School growing up. Her mindset when she began looking at universities to attend was actually to avoid going to UNT, as she wanted to experience a new city and school. But after speaking with Mean Green head coach John Hedlund and the other athletes on the team, she felt so comfortable that she had to reconsider.

“I enjoyed talking to him in his office and the girls made me feel at home and part of the program already and I wasn’t even here yet,” Hodges said. “And also having my family and friends in the crowd every weekend was taken into account, so that’s what I think made my final decision to come here.”

Kelsey’s mother Ann Hodges said that she and her husband Kevin were very happy upon hearing Kelsey’s decision to attend UNT. They have attended every game of hers and have been fully supportive of Kelsey playing soccer since she was a child.

“As her club days progressed you can tell that she stood out for the passion of the game and being able to read the game as well as she did,” Ann said. “Her goal was to play college soccer and now it’s to go further. Her dedication, no matter what she’s involved in, will be 100 percent.”

Hedlund said that along with being the anchor of the back line, Kelsey is also a big part of the team coming together off the field and bonding as friends.

“It’s really a close-knit group team that is led from her, it’s almost like a sorority up here with the girls,” Hedlund said. “She’s a big part of getting the team together and doing those things. She’s really a complete person as far as on the field and off.”

Teammate Allison Guderian, a senior defender for the Mean Green, said Kelsey has been a huge help making sure everyone on the team knows what they’re doing and spreading positivity. As a roommate of Kelsey, Guderian also said the great partnership playing the game translates well to a great friendship.

“Off the field we have a great relationship and on the field the chemistry is right,” Guderian said.

Kelsey hopes to play professionally after her time at UNT is over, but if that doesn’t work out then she plans to pursue work as a marketer for a top sports company like Nike or Gatorade with her business marketing degree. Until she has to cross that bridge, Kelsey is going to focus on her last season and will hold on to the gratitude she has for having this opportunity to play.

“Growing up I never thought I’d put on a North Texas jersey,” Kelsey said. “It’s been great. I’ve had amazing experiences and I don’t regret staying close to home.”
