The Mean Green men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the year in a road game against the University of Oklahoma 95-82 on Monday.

The Oklahoma offense shot 52.9 percent on field goals and UNT couldn’t make the adjustments on defense to contain the Sooners. Although the Mean Green drew within six points with 12 minutes remaining, the team could not get closer, citing communication as a problem down the stretch.

“We got a little fatigued and there was less talking,” senior guard Vertrail Vaughns said. “They took advantage of that opportunity.”

The main production for UNT came from senior guard Alzee Williams, who scored 24 points, and junior forward Keith Coleman, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds. But the Sooners outscored the Mean Green on fast break points 13-4, something head coach Tony Benford said was a key to the loss.

“We gave up too many transition points. We got to get to stops and we didn’t stop,” Benford said. “We’re going to get better at it. Our guys will work hard. We have great attitudes.”

Against big-name schools like the University of Oklahoma, players try to keep that idea from getting in their heads.

“We just try to treat each game as another stepping stone to get better,” senior guard Brandan Walton said. “Personally and as a team collectively, we try to look at it as any other game and try not to hype it up, but come out with the same intensity as other games.”

This game marked the first in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. It’s a collaborative tournament with the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches to spread the fight against cancer and also promote healthy living.

The Mean Green will return to the Super Pit for the next game in the tournament on Thursday when the team plays Nicholls State University at 7 p.m.
