The University of North Texas New College at Frisco is now open with eight subject areas including finance, journalism and digital retailing.
University officials assert that the location of the facility will allow UNT students to get hands-on experience and engage with industry leaders in a rapidly developing area in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In an open letter to the UNT community, UNT president Neal Smatresk referred to the effort as an entrepreneurial approach to education.
Each coming semester will bring with it an expansion in subjects offered, most geared toward the corporations with headquarters in the area. Doing summer 2016, the campus will offer professional development courses and by fall 2016 it will offer courses in areas like gaming, cybersecurity and big data analytics
The New College, which is located at Hall Office Park in Frisco, is directed by UNT technical writing professor Brenda Sims. The college will offer middle school and high school level classes in addition to college courses, focusing on STEM fields, technology and college readiness.
Toyota, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Frito-Lay and Texas Instruments are are among the corporate headquarters located in Collin County. The curriculum at the New College is geared toward the needs of such companies, with components of each class devoted to technology as well as communication and industry engagement.
