The UNT Police Department opened an online reporting system on Feb. 1 to better assist the UNT community and keep more cops on the streets.

The citizen’s online police reporting system’s job is to report crimes that occur on UNT property, but are not  in progress such as harassment, vandalism and vehicle burglary. People are still able to file incident reports in person.

“The UNT Police Department wants to make sure that the UNT community does not use this system if the crime is in progress,” said Corporal John Delong.

Three online reports were made in five days, and it is still too soon to acknowledge if the system has led to any arrests, Cpl. John Delong said.

Denton, Fort Worth and Richardson Police Departments use the system powered by Copologic’s online citizen police reporting.

Delong said the system was purchased through the police department’s budget and is something the UNT command staff has wanted for a long time.

“From the agency’s perspective, officers are still able to use the information to address any trends in crime, while having more resources on the patrol to address those concerns and trends because they aren’t tied up for hours doing paperwork,” said Andrew Cartwright, Copologic spokesmen.

The system gives people time to collect themselves after an incident and to file a report when they feel ready.

“When weighing the options, waiting hours for an officer or feeling rushed and unprepared to answer certain questions related to the crime isn’t nearly as convenient as spending 10 to 15 minutes online at a time that works best for you to file your report with the agency,” Cartwright said.
