With the first conference game just a week away, the UNT softball team heads back to San Marcos for the CenturyLink Classic – the final tournament of the preseason.

In the tournament, the Mean Green (7-9) will face familiar foes, the Texas State University Bobcats (2-12) and the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christie Islanders (5-10).

UNT will also play one game against the Purdue University Boilermakers (6-9).

UNT is 7-5 all time against the Bobcats and 5-4 all time against the Islanders, and the Mean Green has already defeated both teams this season. Saturday’s game against Purdue will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.

The Mean Green spent last weekend in San Marcos at the Texas Shootout, where the team went 3-2 in games against Texas State, Texas Tech University and Baylor University.

“This last tournament with these girls and to play as a member of the Mean Green really means a lot to me,” senior utility player Lesley Hirsch said. “Plus playing teams we are familiar with multiple times this weekend will really prepare us for the series style of play during the conference season.”

Head coach T.J. Hubbard is looking to see final improvements from the team before the first Sun Belt Conference series against Florida International University begins on March 9.

The team has been working to improve communication on defense and getting the offense rolling in the early innings.

“Our defensive communication has gotten a lot better, but I still feel that we are struggling a little bit with the offense,” Hubbard said. “This weekend I would really like to see some consistency throughout our lineup.”

At the plate, sophomore infielder Jordan Terry has led the way for the Mean Green. Now 16 games into the season, she leads the squad with a .297 batting average, two homeruns, 10 runs batted in and eight bases on balls.

“It’s been an exciting first couple weeks of the season for me and it’s definitely given me some confidence heading onto the conference season,” Terry said. “I would love to continue to produce for this team, keep rallies going and be a leader out there.”

The first day of the CenturyLink Classic for UNT is today at 10 a.m. against the Islanders followed by a 3 p.m. game with Texas State. The three-day event will run through Sunday.
