The Mean Green women’s soccer team started off the season on a good note, grabbing a pair of wins over the weekend. On Friday night, the Mean Green upended Texas Southern University 9-1 in the season opener, and on Sunday, tangled with Houston Baptist University for a 1-0 win. Freshman forward Rachel Holden led the way in both games, scoring a hat trick during her debut and the game-winning goal in Sunday’s victory.

Texas Southern

UNT’s (2-0) win over Texas Southern (0-1) was a team effort, with the offense scoring nine goals by six different players. Holden scored three and senior forward Lynda Hercules scored two in the first half.

“The previous training from the coaches helps with the scoring,” Holden said. “Scoring early in the season gives me confidence for the next games.”

It was a good start to the season with the defense allowing only one goal while the offense outshot the opponent 19-3.

Houston Baptist

Houston Baptist (0-2) came in to Denton, and UNT prevailed in a 1-0 victory at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

The Mean Green got a goal from freshman Rachel Holden, which proved to be the game winner and was the game’s lone goal. Backed by a solid defense, Jackie Kerestine had nine saves while holding Houston Baptist to a shutout.

Head coach John Hedlund used frequent substitutions to keep his team fresh thanks to the team’s depth.

“It’s one of our strengths this year,” Hedlund said. “We feel we can roll six or seven [players] off the bench regardless of who we play.”

Sophomore forward Amber Haggerty echoed her coach’s thoughts on wearing teams down as the reigning Sun Belt Conference champions move to a new conference with entirely new teams.

“We’ve been working to get in shape harder,” Haggerty said. “In Conference-USA, there’s more competition, more ability. So working on those types of things in practice helps us.”

The team travels to North Carolina to play in the Wake Forest Invitational on Friday and Sunday.
