As Baltimore entered a state of emergency and adopted an enforced curfew on Monday, UNT students and faculty tweeted their thoughts about the riots, the looting and the reaction of media outlets.

The rioting started early Monday after the funeral of Freddie Gray, who fell into a coma and died after being arrested by the Baltimore Police Department April 19 for unclear reasons. An autopsy hasn’t been completed, but Gray’s family said he had suffered severe neck injuries and a crushed larynx. Protesters gathered in Baltimore, but since Gray’s funeral The Baltimore Sun has reported widespread rioting, arson, violence and looting in West Baltimore.

SGA president-elect and political science junior Adam Alattry said the nature of news coverage exacerbates these situations.

Photojournalism senior David Deason said people needed to examine the entire situation, without ignoring key factors.

The Student Government Association account reached out to students to start a dialogue on the events.

Recent UNT guest lecturer and senior Atlantic editor Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote an analysis of the history of violent and nonviolent protest in America and shared it with his followers.

Adjunct journalism professor Christian McPhate tweeted this New York Times article, an in-depth breakdown of how the protests in Baltimore turned violent.

As protests continue, the city in Baltimore remains in disarray. We will update this story as it develops.
