In the midst of trying to secure a first-round bye in the upcoming Conference-USA tournament, the senior players of the Mean Green volleyball team are trying to take in the moments as they prepare for the last home game of their careers against the University of Texas-El Paso on Sunday.

“These are the things they need to cherish and remember, because once they are gone, it’s gone forever,” head coach Andrew Palileo said.

Palileo also said that the way the seniors have comeback this season and turned their game around to win three straight games is impressive. He wants them to focus on the little things like the road trips and hanging with the team.

“It’s something you don’t want to think about too much, so I really don’t want to think about it now,” Senior outside hitter Courtney Windham said.

Her teammate, senior middle blocker Karissa Flack, is also as emotional on the thought of her final game at UNT.

“At the moment I am sad, but I am hoping to give the crowd a win,” Flack said.

The team knows that if they want anything to celebrate, it needs a repeat performance of the win over Tulane University. A four-set victory by UNT gave Tulane its third loss of the year.

“We got momentum going into the closing matches of the season, and we need to keep working hard and focusing in practice every day,” Palileo said.

Against UTEP, the focus is on senior middle blocker Xitlali Herrera, who has been named to the Conference USA First Team the past two seasons.

“If we slow her down, then we slow the rest of the team down,” Flack said.

For a shot at a first-round bye and a possible tie in the conference standings, the Mean Green must beat UTEP and win its final two games for a record of 10-4.

“Taking away their spirit from the beginning, it’s really going to help us,” Windham said.

The Mean Green faces UTEP at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Mean Green Volleyball Center.
