UNT vs. Rice: First Half

November 23
20:07 2010

Well I made it here just in time. I’m fresh off of devouring endless amounts of delicious food at the NT Daily Thanksgiving, so bare with me if my rate of blogging is a little slow to start the game. The bottom line going into this game is this: expect a close, competitive game. The last 4 meetings have been decided by two points or less.

18:20 1st half: It’s funny what happens when a team beats Big 12 competition at home- the student section is totally packed and cheering loudly. Shannon Shorther sank a jumper to score the games only points so far. 2-0 UNT.

17:48: Shorter loses the ball in transition, it would have been an easy layup for the senior. Tied at 2.

17:07: George Odufuwa grabs rebounds faster than I snag croissants on Turkey Day. The former Arizona State player grabs an offensive board and heads to the line

16:23: Both offenses with shaky starts…Odufuwa made one of two to give UNT a 3-2 edge early.

15:21: Tristan picks his favorite spot by driving to the lane and makes a runner to give UNT a 5-4 lead. Kedrick surprises nobody with an emphatic block on the other end and Odufuwa is fouled in transition. He’ll shoot two.

14:58: Official timeout. Slow starts for both offenses, the Mean Green defense is forcing tough shots for the Owls. I spend my free time hoping there’s some chicken express left in the office post game.

Former member of the Iran national team Arsalan Kazemi is already making his presence felt with four points and four rebounds. He’s Rice’s best player and the match up between him and Odufuwa is one the game’s top storylines.

George makes both free throws and UNT has a 7-4 lead.

13:57 : White makes a layup in transition, the Mean Green D is creating opportunities in transition constantly. Kazemi answers with a bucket of his own, 9-6 UNT

13:35: Kedrick sinks a basket down low and Shannon draws a charge. 11-6 Mean Green.

12:45: Kazemi scores once again with Hogans covering every inch of his body. Kedrick has his revenge seconds later, swatting a Rice shot after a UNT miss. 11-8 Mean Green.

12:17 A Rice three-pointer ties the game at 11, the reserves have filled in for everyone except Josh. It’s Josh, Domo, Ben, Alonzo and Mr. Holman

11:51: Offensive foul called on Dominique Johnson and Rice takes over with a little momentum. Still tied at 11.

Kazemi is already flirting with a halftime double double, scoring 6 points and recording 8 boards so far. Neither team lighting it up from the field, Rice is shooting 5-15 and UNT is 4-10.

11:05: White pickpockets a Rice player and the ball is knocked out of bounds. Holman shows some touch after the inbound with a nice runner to give UNT the lead again 13-11.

10:30 Goaltending called on Rice,no basket. UNT answers on the other end with a White jumper, 15-11.

9:53: ANother three pointer for Cory Pflieger makes it a one point game and a steal gives Rice the ball back. 15-14 UNT.

9:00: Ben Knox is dominated down low during a Rice score but Johnson responds and gives UNT the lead. 17-16.

8:46: Three-point play the old-fashioned way for the Owls. Knox has three fouls, zero points. A player should never have three more fouls than points, he is a liability out there. 19-17 Owls.

7:54: Odufuwa goes hard for a rebound and takes a spill, foul called on Rice. The top concern is for George’s health, as he still hasn’t gotten up. Hopefully he’ll be fine.

Odufuwa gets up and my heart begins to continue beating again. That could have been bad!

UNT D doing a nice job on the Rice shooters, holding them to 8-21 shooting for the game. Still a 19-17 edge for the Owls.

Looks like Tristo got a haircut, I didn’t think he had any hair to cut off but it was hard to recognize him at first.

7:00: Rice hit another triple. now 22-17.

6: 05: The man with the new cut comes through! Thompson makes a layup to make it a three-point game

5:45: Johnson abuses the Rice defense, crossing two defenders and leaving a beautiful pass for Holman, who dunks it to make it a one point game. The Whitehouse native hung on for too long, leading to a technical foul. Rice player makes both shots, UNT crowd sounds as unhappy as Albert Pujols when he heard about the NL MVP voting.

5:22: Loose ball goes to UNT, 24-21 lead for  Rice.

4:45: Maybe Thompson’s new hairdo has added even more speed…okay I’ll stop analyzing Tristan’s hair. He makes a solid layup and its a 26-23 lead for RIce.

3:31: Great defense by Josh and Tristan. they force a steal and call a timeout as soon as they get their paws on the ball. Still 26-23 as we near the end of the half.

3:01: Mistakes for both teams: Hogans misses a putback on a Domo missed three and then Rice throws the ball out of bounds. It’s been a defensive oriented, grind it out type of game so far. Rice is an awful 10-30 and UNT can’t boast either, shooting 10-26.

Both teams have 18 rebounds each, pretty evenly matched game on the post so far. Crowd responds to “We Will Rock You” playing for first time in school history.

2:30: Rice stops UNT and a questionable call on Johnson for reaching. It looked like all ball. Kazemi makes one of two, 27-23 Rice.

2:00: George gets the best of Kazemi on a jump hook and Rice responds with a jumper by Sulieman Braimoh

1:29: Timeout called by Rice, who has a 29-25 lead. Good time for a timeout, this 1:29 is extremely important for both teams. Neither group playing outstanding but Rice has outhustled and outplayed UNT for most of this half.

35: Braimoh scores with 3 UNT players around him and Tristan misses a three.

15.6: UNT has the ball but also owns a six point defecit. 31-25 Rice.

Half: Josh missesa three pointer at the end and it remains a 31-25 Rice edge. Dissapointing first half for the Mean Green, who usually plays better in the second half.
