The Mean Green shook off a slow start to finish the weekend’s games strongly, winning two out of three games against Troy University and defeating Oklahoma State University on Wednesday after splitting a doubleheader with Florida International University.

FIU

The Mean Green (14-12, 3-2) shared the spoils in a pair of one-run games against Florida International (21-13, 4-1) on March 10.

The first game of the doubleheader featured only eight combined hits by the two teams, with FIU shutting UNT out, 1-0.

The Mean Green won the second game, 2-1. Junior pitcher Lauren Poole scored the winning run in the fifth inning after an error by Florida International pitcher Mari Dawson.

TROY

UNT lost the opening game of its doubleheader against the Trojans (12-18, 2-3), 10-8, but the Mean Green bounced back in its second game, winning 8-6. Poole recorded the victory, as she pitched four and a third innings without allowing a run.

The Mean Green finished the three-game series on top, defeating Troy 10-2 on Sunday. Freshman utility player Taylor Schoblocher hit her second and third home runs of the weekend in the victory, which head coach T.J. Hubbard said he hopes is a sign of good things to come.

“She’s been one of the kids we’ve been leaning on offensively,” Hubbard said. “So we’re hoping this gets her out of her slump and on the fast track back to offensive production. She had a great weekend and hopefully she’ll be able to contribute in the next few weeks.”

OSU

The Mean Green avenged its loss earlier this season against OSU by defeating the Cowgirls (19-13) 4-3 on Wednesday night. UNT’s victory snapped Oklahoma State’s 12-game winning streak.

Sophomore infielder Jordan Terry hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to give the Mean Green a lead it would not relinquish. Terry also had an RBI single in the third inning.

“It felt good to put my team in the lead, especially because being tied is very uncomfortable for a pitcher,” Terry said.

The Mean Green was ahead 2-0 thanks to an RBI single from sophomore Danielle Hoff before OSU tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-run homer of its own.

“We went into this game really prepared and we knew that we could beat them,” Hoff said. “We played them a few weeks ago, and we didn’t have a very good game. But we knew that if we played the way we know how we could win.”

WKU

The Mean Green will battle Sun Belt Conference-leading Western Kentucky University in a three-game series this weekend in Bowling Green, Ky. The Hilltoppers are led by senior outfielder Katrina Metoyer, who is in the top three in 10 offensive categories for her team.

Hubbard said that while the team is still suffering from a few mental mistakes due to inexperience, he feels like it has turned a corner heading into the second half of the season.

“I feel like it’s going pretty well,” Hubbard said. “There have been a couple of games I feel like we should have won along the way, but I feel like we’ve played well over the long term.”
