Although Mean Green head coach Mike Petersen’s team was victorious in a 77-70 win against the University of Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday night, he feels that this team’s growing pains are not behind it yet.

“That’s the beautiful thing about athletics,” Petersen said.  “We’re not where we were, but we’re not where we want to be.”

Entering his second year as a head coach of the Mean Green, Petersen said that he liked his team’s effort and energy, but that there was a five-minute stretch in the first half where the team looked a little disjointed.

Six players made their debuts for the Mean Green in the game, but it was the veterans of the team that helped the Mean Green get a victory.

Sophomore forward Acheil Tac contributed in a big way by recording the Mean Green’s first double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

“I felt like I did good out there tonight,” Tac said. “I just try to get every rebound that comes my way, hustle down the court and defend.”

Sophmore forward Alexis Hyder, who led the team in scoring and rebounding last year, was impressive on the block with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Hyder was named to the Sun Belt Conference third team last year and feels optimistic about this team as she heads into her second season.

“We’re getting more efficient in learning each other,” Hyder said.  “We’re getting good at putting the ball in the right person’s hands at the right moment in time.”

The Mean Green’s next game will be on Monday at the Super Pit against Texas A&M University. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
