The Mean Green women’s basketball team ended a two-game losing streak with a pair of wins over the weekend at the Hospitality Hill Challenge, a tournament hosted by UNT on Saturday and Sunday.

Abilene Christian

The Mean Green (3-2) defeated Abilene Christian University 64-50 in a game that head coach Mike Petersen said was fueled by the defense. With a high rate of turnovers, UNT only held a narrow three-point lead at halftime after seven lead changes.

“At halftime, I was amazed we were ahead,” head coach Mike Petersen said. “It’s very difficult to be ahead with 17 turnovers.”

But UNT slowly pulled away during the second half, holding ACU (4-2) to 22 percent on field goals while the Mean Green shot 52 percent itself.

Three players posted double digits in points during the game. Junior forward Breisha Wynn was the leading scorer with 15 points.

“We definitely came out and played with more effort during this game and we were feeding off of each other very well,” sophomore forward Alexis Hyder said.

Bethune Cookman

The Mean Green took care of Bethune Cookman University 82-49 in a game that UNT dominated from the start. Petersen said BCU (1-5) couldn’t keep up with the face-paced UNT offense throughout the game.

“We did a lot of things right tonight,” Petersen said. “I said at the pre-game tonight that the way you win two games in a row is to play one play at a time.”

At the half, the Mean Green held BCU to just 15 points and 16.1 percent field goal shooting. While the ACU game featured a great defensive effort, both sides had great effort against BCU.

“Today, we were really good on both ends,” Wynn said. “We really went after them and really needed this win.”

UNT’s next game is at home on Tuesday against Grand Canyon University. It tips off at 5 p.m.
