The Mean Green volleyball team defeated Middle Tennessee State University (8-20, 6-8) on senior night in four sets, 3-1. North Texas (18-12, 10-5) has now won its senior night match in seven consecutive seasons.

Outside hitter Carnae Dillard, the only senior on the roster, was honored before the game and led the Mean Green to victory. Dillard led the team with 21 kills to extend her career total to 2,281, the most of any current player in the nation.

“The energy was great tonight,” Dillard said. “I felt like my team was playing for me, and I was playing for them back.”

A 9-2 run in the middle of the first set propelled North Texas to an early 1-0 lead. Although Dillard led the team with five kills, the entire roster played well, putting up five of its 15 total blocks and a .500 attack percentage in the opening frame.

North Texas continued its dominance in the second set, holding a lead the entire time and winning 25-14. At that point, the Mean Green held an overwhelming advantage in attack efficiency, .491 – .075.

The third set was the closest of them all, losing 26-24. The set featured 18 ties and eight lead changes. Early in the frame, senior setter Amy Henard registered her 3,257th career assist, vaulting herself into fourth all-time in school history. Henard finished the game with 52, marking the sixth time she’s eclipsed 50 in a game this season.

“If it wasn’t for Carnae putting the ball down and the girls getting passes to me, it wouldn’t happen the way it does,” Henard said.

Despite being down 19-14 in fourth set, the Mean Green fought back, going on a 12-5 run to close out the victory.

Although North Texas had already clinched a spot in the Conference-USA tournament, the outcome of its next game will determine its seeding. The regular season will conclude with another home game on Sunday at 1 p.m. against the University of Texas at San Antonio.

“If we have a letdown against UTSA, we’re going to be in trouble,” head coach Andrew Palileo said. “We’ve got to execute like we did the first two sets.”
