The Mean Green volleyball team returned to action to start its spring season in the second annual Fundamental Athletic Sports Training Collegiate Invite tournament, finishing 3-1 in four games played.

UNT lost to Sam Houston State University (25-20, 22-25, 8-15) in the first game, but swept its next three opponents – University of Louisiana-Lafeyette (25-15, 25-20), Southern Methodist University (25-19, 25-21) and McNeese State University (25-16, 25-19). However, at this point in the season, the team’s priority is not about the wins.

“[The] spring season is all about getting in shape,” junior middle blocker Courtney Windham said. “It’s not necessarily about going out there and winning a bunch of tournaments. It’s about certain skill levels to help us go through the summer and go through the rest of the year.”

The volleyball team is coming off the program’s best years in school history, tying a school record with 26 wins and reaching the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship for the first time in school history. In that game, they fell to nationally ranked Western Kentucky University.

Going into next season, the team loses only one senior in setter May Allen. Her replacement, freshman setter Amy Hernard, is highly ranked coming out of high school but will take time to adjust to the team.

“Without a coach, it’s very hard,” Windham said. “We know what we’re used to, but the setter on the court is a person who naturally has to come in and be in charge. Since no one is giving her feedback, it’s hard for her to take control of the situation.”

Former head coach Ken Murczek resigned to coach Wake Forest University’s volleyball team on Feb. 27, leaving the team without a coach for the past month. The players have been leading workouts almost entirely on their own, but a new coach is expected to be announced soon.

Outside hitter Carnae Dillard, who was named SBC Freshman of the Year last season, knows the team still has to work hard even without a coach.

“[We’re] getting our chemistry together to start flowing right,” she said.
