The Mean Green volleyball team heads to Fort Worth for the Texas Christian University College Tournament on Saturday, as it continues to adjust to new head coach Andrew Palileo and his system.

UNT will play four of the six teams present at the tournament: Texas Wesleyan University at 9:30 a.m., the University of Oklahoma at 10:30 a.m., TCU at 2 p.m. and Southern Methodist University at 3 p.m.

Palileo singled out the “serve-receive” passing, which occurs on the possessions where the opposing team serves the ball, as a weak point in the tournament last weekend.

“Part of that is [the players] doing what they used to do and myself implementing some things,” Palileo said. “They got caught in between. This week has mostly been about our system.”

Palileo differs from former head coach Ken Murczek in both his system and his coaching style.

“[Palileo] has a better outlook on the game than coach Ken,” junior middle blocker Courtney Windham said. “He does a better job explaining why we do things and certain mentalities that aren’t as obvious to us because we’re playing. I like the way that he breaks down the game.”

Windham said that one of her club volleyball coaches for several years reminds her of Palileo, and other Mean Green players have similar opinions.

“[He’s a] very nice guy, very mellow, very laid back and very focused,” sophomore outside hitter Eboni Godfrey said.

Three of the team’s opponents this weekend have already faced UNT once in the spring season. Last weekend at the University of Texas-Arlington College Tournament, the Mean Green defeated TCU but lost to OU, each in three sets. It also beat SMU in two sets in the team’s opening tournament on March 23.

The games will take place in the TCU Recreation Center and admission is free.
