Volleyball continues to roll, knocks off Florida Atlantic

Continuing the trend of wins from North Texas athletics teams this weekend, the Mean Green volleyball team won its seventh straight game after doing what they do best against Florida Atlantic University in four-set finish (25-23, 25-18, 24-26, 25-23).

Strong performances from freshman outside hitter Barbara Teakell and senior middle blocker Amanda Chamberlain were two of the biggest factors in the road victory as Teakell set a career and game-high with 20 kills along with 12 digs, and 4 blocks.

Chamberlain had yet another strong outing as she racked up 18 kills and 8 blocks.

“I think some of the biggest things we did well today was our blocking, tracking, and setting up hitters,” Teakell said. “Focusing on our defense was the biggest thing coming into today.”

The win extended the red-hot North Texas (19-2, 6-1) team’s winning streak to seven, just three short of the team’s season-long 10 consecutive wins earlier this season. FAU (11-7, 2-4) came into the game looking to impede upon the successful season the Mean Green have produced this year with persistent offense and obstructive defense.

But the confidence North Texas has developed this year paid off, helping guide the Mean Green past the Owls.

“Our confidence is pretty high in ourselves and in each other right now,” Chamberlain said. “Being able to come into someone’s home and take a win on the road, then to continue that level of play at home with no interruption is huge this time of year.”

North Texas now stands firmly in second place in Conference-USA standings, one game behind the current leader, Western Kentucky University (21-2, 7-0).

The bar is set for the Mean Green as they move toward the rugged latter stage of the season as the team continues its remarkable turnaround from what was a tough year last season.

“I don’t know if we can say we’d be 19-2,” Palileo said. “I think, last year, we were a lot better than our record indicated. Making changes in the spring, working hard in the gym, I knew this could be a special team as well as a special season with the talent we have.”

Next Up: North Texas takes on the University of North Carolina – Charlotte at noon next Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
