The Mean Green volleyball team fell to 1-2 in Conference USA play after losing a home game to Rice University Wednesday night in four sets. (25-14, 30-32, 21-24, 20-25).

North Texas was able to get off to a fast start by scoring nine of the first 11 points of the match. Rice was then able to bring the score back within five before North Texas, behind the solid attacking play of their outside hitters, was able to pull away to take set one. Senior Hanna Forst and junior Carnae Dillard accounted for 10 of the set’s 18 kills, and both had over a .500 hitting percentage for the set.

“I think in the first set the energy level was really good and helped us get off to a good start,” Dillard said. “We were digging a lot more balls and making more plays than they were. We were really firing on all cylinders and executing really well in the first set.”

Rice then battled back to win the next two sets including the second set which was a heated battle that involved 12 extra points.

The Mean Green then started the fourth set fast by taking a 14-9 lead before the Owls were able to tie it at 17. The set went back and forth until Rice rode the momentum and stole the win from the Mean Green.

“I think the turning point was that we were satisfied with the first set,” Forst said. “It wasn’t that we gave up or anything, but we really were at ease with our play and lost a lot of momentum in the next sets. We knew they were going to battle back, we just weren’t able to turn on the gas at the end.”

Throughout the last three sets, although they ended in a loss, the Mean Green were never behind by more than 5 points. Even though it was a tough loss for the team, there were some positives that head coach Andrew Palileo said that they could take from the game.

“I really liked how we came out strong,” Palileo said. “We did some things really well in the first two sets and even though we lost the second set, we had chances but were just unable to take advantage.

Next up, the Mean Green will be back on the court Friday to play Louisiana Tech University 7:00 p.m. at home.
