The Mean Green Volleyball squad improved to 3-1 after pulling off a 3-0 win on the road at Stephen F. Austin State University in straight setson Monday night.
UNT (3-1) dominated in all aspects of the game by winning all three sets against SFA (1-3) in convincing fashion (25-17, 25-21, and 25-17). Freshman Alexis Wright was able to come off the bench and make an instant impact with 13 kills in 22 attacks. This was her second game in a row that she was able to score on more than half of her opportunities.
“We are really excited to have a threat like her on our roster.” head coach Andrew Palileo said after the match. “After having two strong games in a row we are excited to get her back on the court for her to gain experience and build more confidence.”
With the victory, UNT improves to 19-23 all-time against the Lumberjacks. and also gave them their first road win of the season. Last year the Mean Green went 11-2 at home, but finished 3-8 on the road which makes winning on the road this year a top priority.
“Winning on the road has really boosted our confidence.” Wright said. “It felt really good to be able to go there and play our game for the victory out on the road.”
The Mean Green offense, led by Wright, junior outside hitter Carnae Dillard, and sophomore setter Amy Henard among others, were able to take advantage of the Lumberjack defense. Dillard had 16 kills on the night along with 10 digs in the team’s third win of the season. She said the team’s defense was one of the keys to the victory.
“Our defensive play was great tonight.” Dillard said. “That opened up the court and gave us the option to spread the ball around and confused the other team because they had no idea where the ball was coming from.”
The team will head to San Marcos this weekend to compete in the Texas State Invitational starting on Friday against Wichita State at 5 PM.
