After falling to rival Western Kentucky in an intense match on Sunday afternoon, the Mean Green women’s volleyball team fell in another back-and-forth contest to Rice University, losing in five sets (26-24, 22-25, 25-19, 17-25, 10-15).

After winning four games in a row, the Mean Green (14-10, 6-3) is now on a two game losing streak with seven games remaining in conference play this season.

The Mean Green won an intense first set that set the tone of the match early and went to extra points. However, after North Texas grabbed a 2-1 set lead, the momentum began to turn towards the Owls.

After forcing the match to a decisive fifth set, Rice took control from the opening serve and jumped out to a commanding 11-2 lead on the Mean Green. North Texas attempted a come back with a run led by senior Carnae Dillard late in the match, but it was too little too late for the Mean Green.

Dillard led all players with 28 kills and 23 digs and now sits just 64 kills away from the North Texas all-time record. Based on recent performances, Dillard is set to reach that mark between Oct. 29-30 when the Mean Green host UTEP and Southern Mississippi.

In addition to the strong game from Dillard, freshman Hannah Shaw stood out with her best offensive performance of the season and finished the match with 17 kills. Junior captain Amy Henard had 55 assists and 12 digs, while Holly Milam added 7 kills and 10 digs.

The Mean Green is now in a tie for third place in CUSA, but there are five schools ahead of the team in the standings.

North Texas will next travel to Charlotte on Oct. 25, before hosting UTEP and Southern Mississippi in Denton on Oct. 29-30.
