After starting the season at the Loyola Marymount Invitational in Los Angeles, the Mean Green volleyball team will host a tournament of its own this Friday and Saturday.

UNT (2-2) is 7-1 all-time headed into the third year of the North Texas Invitational and will look to continue defending its home court over the weekend.

“Whenever you play at home it’s easier – you don’t have to worry about waking up at seven and practicing in a gym you’re not used to, or eating food that is not yours,” senior outside hitter Courtney Windham said. “It’s just easier to play when you have been practicing for a while and where your friends and your family are.”

The other teams participating in the tournament this year include Prairie View A&M University (1-3), the University of Utah (3-0), Northwestern State University (0-3) and Texas State University (5-0). New head coach Andrew Palileo said that last year’s coaching staff put this tournament together.

“Usually the head coaches know each other so we try to get a good mixture, but the previous staff but this tournament together and the teams, but usually coaches will invite other coaches,” Palileo said.

Freshman setter Amy Henard said that the teams coming in this tournament will be tough, but feels that they can counter it.

“They are all really scrappy. That’s going to be our main goal, to match that just as well,” Henard said. “One of the strong aspects of our team is that we’re very scrappy and we’re going to go for everything.”

Since it’s still early in the season, it will make all the teams they face more difficult than usual.

“The thing about this time of the season is that everyone is a challenge,” Palileo said. “You don’t get a good accurate scouting report because not everyone wants to share videos [of their games]. The girls are going to have to get scouting on the fly during matches and coaches have to do a good job paying attention to what it is they’re doing.”

The Mean Green start Friday against Prairie View A&M at noon and finish against Utah at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, they will end the tournament against Northwestern State at 11 a.m. and Texas State at 7:30 p.m.
