The University of North Texas volleyball team met the Louisiana Tech University Lady Techsters for the second time in a seven day span, this time in Denton. Both matches were winning results for the Mean Green, with North Texas winning on Friday night in straight sets.

North Texas swept LA Tech behind Amy Henard’s historic night and an all-around great offensive team performance. Carnae Dillard led the way for the Mean Green attack-wise, but she had plenty of back up from her young teammates.

“I thought offensively, we were pretty good tonight,” said head coach Andrew Palileo. “We were still a little loose on the defensive side…but our blocking made up for it. That was a big difference tonight.”

The first set started in favor for the Mean Green from as Henard’s opening serve was mishandled by the Lady Techsters, giving North Texas the lead. A turning point in the set came when Dillard picked the back right corner as she rose up above the net and struck. Her shot fell perfectly giving North Texas the 14-13 lead.

After a long rally where Henard made two athletic diving digs in which she laid out for the ball, North Texas added to their lead with another Dillard kill, one of her 14 for the match. North Texas then closed the set out, winning 25-18. The hitting was on point for the Mean Green as they hit .343 in the first set.

The second set was a closer affair as North Texas let the Lady Techsters back into the set late. North Texas’ blocking play would change that, led mostly by sophomore Holly Milam. Milam finished with nine blocks for her team and only one block error. Her play would help the Mean Green take set two 25-22.

“We’ve been working a lot on blocking every day, every practice,” Milam said. “We were just really focused on getting our hands over the net and focus on what Vinh’s (Nguyen) been telling us.”

The Mean Green were absolutely dominant in set three, leading 20-10 as Louisiana Tech used their second timeout of the set. Just a few moments later,  junior setter Henard would cap off her historic night.

Assist 32 of the match for her was also assist 3,000 of her career. She is only the fifth player in program history to reach milestone.

“It’s an awesome feeling and an awesome milestone,” Henard said. “I have to give credit to my teammates, however. Without them I don’t get any of these 3,000 assists.”

North Texas finished set three with a win by the score of 25-14 to take the match. The youngsters of North Texas showed up on the night, with underclassmen of sophomore status or younger accounted for 31 of the Mean Green’s 45 kills.

The Mean Green return to action on Sunday, Oct. 18th when they face No. 22 Western Kentucky University at 12:00 P.M. at the Mean Green Volleyball Center.
