It took all five sets, but North Texas volleyball is off to a winning start. After defeating Winthrop University 3-2 to start the Tiger Invitational at the University of Missouri, the team is ready for the season to kick into high gear.

Carnae Dillard, preseason Conference USA Player of the Year, shined bright, amounting 25 points and a block to end the fifth and final set. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Shaw also stood out with 16.5 points and a .387 hit percentage. Junior setter Amy Henard started her season with 48 of the team’s 59 assists on the night.

The Mean Green (1-0) dominated from the start after Amy Henard opened the match with two straight aces. Winthrop (0-1) scrapped back to make the set competitive, but North Texas pulled away toward the end of the set to win it 25-19 after a ball-handling error on the part of Madilyn McCarty of Winthrop.

As the two teams exchanged points, sets grew more intense. North Texas widened the gap 18-15 in set two after a kill by Dillard, but a Winthrop timeout stopped their momentum. Upon return, Winthrop leveled the match at 21 and the sides exchanged points until a North Texas timeout. Dillard then grabbed a kill to seal the set.

Winthrop then took control and won sets three and four by scores of 25-19 and 25-23 led by redshirt freshman Lourdes Rosario and senior Rachel Lenz. Rosario and Lenz were No. 1 and No. 2 on the team with 21.5 and 16.5 points respectively, most of which came in sets three and four.

An ever-decisive set five was looming, and Shaw and Dillard saw it through. The two combined for seven points via kills and Dillard had the game deciding block, denying Lenz to take set five 15-12.

North Texas returns to action on 10 a.m. Saturday when they face North Dakota State University in the Tiger Invitational.
