Volleyball team could tie season record for wins

With a win on Sunday, the Mean Green volleyball team could become the sixth team in school history to ever reach 20 wins in a season.
This is one of the several school records that this 2012 Mean Green volleyball team is pushing to break this season, including a team-wide record of highest attack percentage for an entire season.
Of course, the team didn’t sit down at the beginning of the season and decide their 2012 resolution was to try to break some school records. The team has been more focused on winning games.
“I forgot that people actually keep records within the school,” junior middle blocker Courtney Windham said.
Junior libero Shelby Tamura is currently seventh in school history for digs in an individual season. She said the stats are not something she is preoccupied with, but she is aware of them.
“I knew I was up there somewhere, but my focus is more of this team and this year,” Tamura said. “It’s not really first priority, but it’s definitely nice to know.”
Head coach Ken Murczek agreed that during the season, these stats are pretty insignificant when the team is solely focused on planning for opponents and winning games.
He said there is plenty of time in the postseason to reflect on statistics.
“It’s something that we reflect on after the season,” he said. “Who got what accolades, did we have any all-conference players. I think the numbers is something we pay a little more attention to once we’re finished, as an evaluation tool.”
If nothing else, making new records just makes it harder for someone else.
“I think it’d be really cool if I could leave as a senior and maybe make my school record again the next year,” Windham said. “Just make it even harder for the next person to come in to break it. I like to make it really tough on everyone.”
