The Delta Zeta Classic concluded for UNT on Saturday in San Marcos with the team sweeping Abiliene Christian University and Texas State University. That secured their first outright tournament championship since 2012.

Abilene Christian University:

The Mean Green (6-1) completed their first win of the day against Abilene Christian University (25-20, 25-19, 25-19) in straight sets.

Freshman middle back Holly Milam had 11 kills and a block in the match, and was named to the All-Tournament team because of her play at the net.

“It’s definitely really exciting,” Milam said. “Everyone’s been working really hard, so a mid-season award is definitely a good feeling.”

Other key contributors were senior defensive specialist Eboni Godfrey, who recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs, and senior outside hitter Hanna Forst with a team high 13 kills.

Texas State:

UNT capped off the tournament with their fourth sweep in seven matches, taking down host Texas State University (25-23, 26-24, 26-24) in straight sets.

Unlike the morning tussle with Abilene Christian, Texas State gave North Texas a dramatic match. UNT fell to an early 10-6 deficit in the first set, but a timeout called by head coach Andrew Palileo gave the Mean Green new life and allowed them to rally to win the set.

The next two sets went into extra points, but the Mean Green prevailed in both of them 26-24. Junior outside hitter Carnae Dillard recorded yet another double-double with 24 kills and 14 digs, and said that their gameplan was effective.

“I think the gameplan was just to get our middles more involved to open up the court,” Dillard said. “We knew where the open spots were going to be.”

The Texas State Tournament victory marks UNT’s first tournament championship since 2012. Although winning on the road against the host team to clinch a championship is especially tough, Palileo said his team stayed focused and did what they needed to do.

“One of the things you have to do on the road is serve well, pass and play defense, and control the floor, and we did that today,” Palileo said.

UNT (6-1) returns home to host the Mean Green Classic this weekend. The action will kick off on Friday at 7 p.m. with another match against Abilene Christian University.
