The beer and the music were free. Let me rephrase that: the fine-brewed craft beers and the excellent indie music were free. No watered-down domestics here. No cacophonous cover bands playing. All of it was free.

This was the second year of Untapped Festival. The daylong concert not only featured up-and-coming musicians but also provided its 21+ crowd with more than 200 different beers to sip on.

Tickets for the concert alone were $28. If you added a beer ticket, it was $35. If you decided you were very important, it was $62 for a VIP ticket (whatever that means).

I made the glorious decision of volunteering. My duties consisted of passing out Untapped coasters to Denton bars before the festival took place. My ticket was promptly sent to my inbox.

The ticket tent scanned my worker-labeled freebie. In return, I was given an artist’s pass. Thanks, Untapped! It’s as though they knew the con artist-like nature of my being there.

Walking through the gate, I was handed the most appropriate (and trendy) swag bag for a beer-ladened indie fest day. This Whole Foods reusable bag contained earplugs, gluten-free tortilla chips, volcano water, a two-ounce snifter, a guide for Untapped, a beer ticket for 12 2-ounce samples and hangover pills.

Not wanting to tote around this goodie bag, I took out my beer ticket and stashed the rest in the car.

In all the excitement, I forgot my sample snifter. Not feeling another hike to the parking lot, I walked up to the vast Real Ale tent, complete with couches and foosball tables, in hopes that it had spares.

The best part was the tent didn’t have extra sampler sippers. It had full-sized plastic cups.

I nearly cried tears of joy when the beer-dispensing lord handed me a glass of Scots Gone Wild Mysterium Verum.

He didn’t ask for my beer ticket. Nobody did. The dispensers were too pleased to be sharing their brews.

Beer tent after beer tent, my glass was being filled with malty or crisp or hoppy happiness.

While the music was a generous plus, the beverages took the main stage.

Eight hours of mellifluous tunes filling my ears, sun drawing the sweat out of my being, and beer perfectly rounding out my belly had never felt so short-lived.
