At the approach of the fall semester, it becomes increasingly important to keep your finances in check. After all, there are tuition bills to be paid and rent isn’t getting any cheaper.

Enter Mean Green Pride Day, a program that offers UNT students an easy way to save money throughout the school year. Students can take advantage of discounts and special deals at local businesses in Denton by wearing green on Fridays.

“The discount was developed to help support the tradition of wearing green on Fridays to build UNT pride,” news promotion manager Buddy Price said. “Area businesses also benefit as well with increased customer flow.”

Price said after contracts with vendors lapsed in April, the University Relations, Communications & Marketing division is working on revamping the long-established program for the upcoming semester with a new theme, “Love Your Mean Green.”

Advertising specialist Wes Martin said the campaign, which is scheduled to launch online Aug. 15, will involve promotional posters, flyers and window clings around campus. Advertising through the homepage will be used as well as social media, he said, including a #meangreenfriday Instagram contest where one winner will be selected each week to receive a UNT spirit pack.

Martin said during the semester, students will be able to find the URCM team passing out free UNT T-shirts on occasional Friday afternoons at the Library Mall.

“Mean Green Pride Day is important because it allows the UNT community to participate in a shared manifestation of culture and behavior that is both a representation of the collective whole and the awesome individuality of our university family,” Martin said.

The program also invites faculty and staff to support the UNT community by wearing green in whatever form they can, Martin said, whether it’s through shirts, hats, or even socks.

“On the most basic level, UNT is a collection of people – people pursuing all different types of passions, united by the pursuit of those passions and the sharing of knowledge,” Martin said. “Mean Green Pride Day is a way for us to celebrate this each Friday.”
