Weekly brunch review: Loco Cafe

This modern yet cozy café and coffee shop surprises the average brunch goer as it provides clean and spacious décor, and a variety of comfort and fresh-baked goods.

Loco Café was opened in May 2011 as a side restaurant for owner, Ken Currin, of another Denton restaurant, Greenhouse Café. The space across from Greenhouse opened up and Currin saw the corner to be a great space for a new breakfast spot, as he also wanted to try his hand in a brunch style restaurant.

“I came up with the name for two reasons,” Currin said. “One, it being on the corner of Locust and Congress, and two, I already had one restaurant so it was kind of crazy opening a second one, hence the ‘loco’.”

Thriving on the craziness, the café proved its worth to Denton in a short time, as guests poured in after recognizing the spot’s strengths, including a signature biscuit. It comes in two choices, jalapeno or honey butter, while maintaining its surprisingly large shape and flaky, croissant-like texture.

Not only has Loco Cafe perfected the art of the biscuit, their hand-shaken teas, made in house, like their blueberry mint flavor, is a must try while visiting Loco. The honorable mention goes to their coffee options for signature blend the Loco Coffee, a brew that regulars make sure to specifically come back for. Local Lisa Nagaoka has been coming to Loco 4-5 times a week alone or with family.

“It’s fresh, different, with cozy seats that I just come in and get work done,” Nagaoka said. “It’s like a coffee shop but more family friendly with a unique menu to enjoy.”

Not only does the café make sure to accommodate families with an easy and open environment, but also with a family-like staff that has been together for years. While the Greenhouse Café opened in 1998, Currin made sure to connect his trusted staff from Greenhouse to Loco, as many were happy and willing to make the change under well-known management.

Coffee bar and manager Theresia Munywoki used to work at Greenhouse until presented with the chance to covert to Loco.

“Ken asked me, ‘Are you a morning person?’ and from there, I’ve worked over here,” Munywoki said. “Though it’s much different here than at Greenhouse, I love it.”
