Wendy Davis, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate who made waves with an 11-hour filibuster last summer, will hold a rally at the Library Mall Sept. 5 at 11:30 a.m.

The rally is the last leg of Davis’ tour across Texas colleges, which started Tuesday in Houston. Political science senior Donald Poer is president of the College Democrats of UNT, the group which coordinated the event with the Davis campaign. He said Davis’ purpose is to learn how to better represent college students.

Student Government Association president Troy Elliott said SGA tried to get both Davis and her opponent, Gregory Abbott, to appear on campus, but they could only get in touch with Davis. To remain non-partisan, Elliott said they handed the information off to the College Democrats.

SGA will be on-hand to register voters at the rally.

North Texas College Republicans chair and education senior Kari Lane said they tried to get Abbott to come to campus, but because of Abbott’s use of a wheelchair and responsibilities as attorney general, accommodations and scheduling were too difficult. Lane said her organization will continue to support Abbott in the months leading up to the election.

During the rally, the mall will be closed off and students will need tickets to get in. They are available for free noon-5 p.m. on the south end of the mall, and can be reserved at http://action.wendydavistexas.com/page/event/detail/rally/4v77d. Gates will open at 11 a.m.
