UNT’s West Dining Hall has reopened after temporarily closing down on Oct. 25 due to concerns for workplace safety. A notice released by the UNT Dining Twitter account was sent out last Thursday afternoon stating the cafeteria was closed due to emergency kitchen repairs, additionally stating that the temporary closure was unavoidable by code because of the safety concern involved.

Students and faculty who hold a West Dining meal plan were asked to visit Bruce instead. The dining hall was closed to allow UNT Facilities to access the kitchen area to determine if falling pieces of plaster located in the ceiling posed a safety issue.

Leigh Anne Gullett, UNT’s associate director of news, said in an email the issues were not considered an immediate hazard to health.

“Because the building is more than 65 years old, there are some small, lightweight pieces of plaster coating some of the enclosed structure above the ceiling tile that are beginning to deteriorate,” Gullett said. “The pieces were determined to be too small and lightweight to pose any danger and are contained within the ceiling space.”

The mentioned area is scheduled to undergo repairs later in the year.

West Dining Hall officially reopened for dinner at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, and returned to normal operating hours on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
