Team White beat Team Green 48-36 in the Mean Green football team’s annual spring game at Apogee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Before the game was the Hall of Fame Induction, when Michael Dunlap, Walter Johnson, Judy Nelson, Willie Parker and George Dunham were all enshrined. It was also announced that Dave Barnett will be the new play-by-play man for the Mean Green, taking over for Dunham.

The Green team was made up of the first and third stringers while the White team was made up of the second and fourth stringers. The game was played in 12-minute quarters and the white team started with a 21-0 lead.

Green got on the board on its second drive thanks to a 58-yard touchdown by senior quarterback Andrew McNulty to sophomore receiver Turner Smiley.

The White team answered back right away. A 62-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Dajon Williams led to a touchdown run sophomore running back Andrew Tucker, giving the White team a 28-7 lead after the first quarter.

“You see we have good backs,” head coach Dan McCarney said. “We have good depth, we have good competition. I thought a number of quarterbacks did some really good things today.”

The second quarter was all Green, as it scored 10 unanswered points. Sophomore kicker Trevor Moore hit a 26-yard field goal and McNulty threw another touchdown to Smiley to go into halftime up 28-17.

“We’re trying to push the tempo offensively,” McNulty said. “There’s going to be some things that don’t go quite as smoothly because you have coaches on both sides and guys split up, but I liked our effort.”

The Green team came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 10 more unanswered points to cut White’s lead to 28-27

The White team answered back with an 11-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Quinn Shanbour to junior tight end Chris Loving to extend its lead to 35-27. Moore hit a 35-yard field goal for the Green team to cut that to 35-30 towards the end of the third quarter.

The Green team took its first lead of the game at 36-35 with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter, when McNulty and Smiley connected for a touchdown for the third time.

But, Green quarterback Josh Cousins was later picked off by senior defensive back Dash Matthew. That set up an 11-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Josh Greer to freshman receiver Tee Goree, giving white a 41-36 lead with 3:29 left to play.

The Green team couldn’t get anything going on its next possession, punting the ball back to White. Williams threw one more touchdown for the white team to make the score 48-36, sealing the win.

McNulty completed 14-29 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Carlos Harris had six catches for 183 yards and Smiley had five catches for 124 yards and three touchdowns. The team will go into the summer and prepare for next fall. The first game of next season will be on the road against Southern Methodist University on Sept. 12.

“We just got to keep working on what we’ve been working on,” redshirt sophomore defensive end Andy Flusche said. “Strength, speed and stamina. Just keep developing our bodies.”
