Wild night for residence halls as Bruce blacks out, Kerr evacuates

The residents of Bruce Hall were left in darkness for nearly an hour when the power went out in the dorm at approximately 9:20 p.m. Monday. To the south, Kerr was evacuated after a fire alarm went off in the building.

Bruce Hall was dark, save for the emergency lights, and the air conditioning and wi-fi were shut down as well. The blackout interrupted many students in the middle of online homework or quizzes. Some were standing around in their bathrobes, as they had been in the shower when it happened.

“The main line just went out,” Resident Assistant Hannah Lupa said.

With the main power line not working, electricians were called to try and fix the problem. Eventually, after checking each of the breakers to the generator, they were able to get the lights back up and running in Bruce Hall.

Brucelings were not left to sit alone in the darkness for the entire time, however. Many resident music majors led a sing-along session in the lobby while in nearly total blackness, lit only by the windows and the numerous cell phones out.

This wasn’t the first time that the power has gone out in Bruce Hall.

“The same thing happened about 12 years ago,” Lupa said. “It was even the same electrician.”

At Kerr, a malfunctioning fire alarm saw students out of bed until the fire marshal came to clear the area.

“We always dump the building to check it out, just to be safe,” housing director Betsy Warren said.

Warren has worked with UNT for 34 years. She said she doesn’t remember the last time two residence halls had a major event in the same night, but she knows it’s happened.

“It’s not that unusual. With 6,000 people in 14 buildings, things could happen at the same time,” she said. “But we have emergency services on standby, so if something does happen, people can come out very quickly.”
