The Mean Green softball team lost the third game in its series with Western Kentucky University 4-0 Sunday at home.

North Texas (14-18, 6-6 C-USA) came into Sunday trying to avoid being swept by Western Kentucky (18-6, 5-1 C-USA) after dropping a doubleheader yesterday. Freshman pitcher Monique Garcia pitched four shutout innings before surrendering two runs in the fifth to give WKU a 2-0 lead.

“For her she’s getting in better shape, mentally, physically,” head coach Tracey Kee said. “And I think she’s realizing she wants to pitch.”

WKU third baseman Preslie Cruce hit a home run off Garcia in the sixth inning off Garcia, making Kee put sub in sophomore pitcher Kenzie Grimes. Western Kentucky finished with one more home run from catcher Dani Pugh in the sixth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Once again, North Texas couldn’t get anything going against WKU pitcher Miranda Kramer, who pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts and one hit. Kee said the team improved against the pitcher, who had 18 strikeouts in the first two games.

“As I told my kids, she paints that outside corner like a Picasso, but for us I thought we made better adjustments today,” Kee said. ” We’d like to see her again. The better off we see her again, the better off we’re in the conference tournament.”

North Texas’ lone hit came from sophomore catcher Shelbie Smith, continuing her good weekend. In game one, Smith had one home run and 5 RBI.

“I’m seeing the ball really well this weekend,” Smith said. “I just feel like I’m getting back into it, after coming off an injury, so I feel good.”

The team is now on a four game losing streak, and senior infielder Dani Hoff said that makes Wednesday’s matchup with the University of Texas – Arlington even more important.

“We just need to go into UTA with the mindset that we should beat them and we will,” Hoff said. “I just think we need to put this behind us.”

The team will play UTA at 6 p.m. Wednesday on the road.
