The Mean Green women’s basketball team ended its three-game losing streak emphatically on Wednesday, handing the University of Louisiana-Lafayette its eighth-straight defeat.

UNT (8-13, 7-5) finally got its offense rolling after consecutive games scoring under 50 points. The victory over ULL (7-13, 1-11) completed the season sweep – the Mean Green also defeated the Ragin’ Cajuns on Dec. 1.

After struggling to shoot the ball early, including a seven-minute scoring drought, the Mean Green went on a 9-0 run to end the second half.

“We didn’t start very well,” head coach Mike Petersen said. “We had started so well the last ten games I’m just spoiled. We were just a little sluggish to start, but we fought through it very well.”

Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Garry Brodhead felt fortunate that UNT didn’t hit more shots early on.

“We got lucky in the first half that North Texas didn’t shoot well, but we didn’t guard them,” Brodhead said after the game. “What’s really disappointing is the fact that when you know you can guard somebody and you don’t.”

The Mean Green took advantage of a struggling ULL team discouraged from its losing streak.

“I’m sure people are thinking about the losing streak,” Ragin’ Cajuns senior guard Brandi Schambough said. “That’s because a lot of the players on our team have never had a losing season before.”

Freshman forward Alexis Hyder came up big for the Mean Green, scoring 14 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds.

“We challenged her to rebound the ball, and she did,” Petersen said. “This is a team we should rebound the ball against. Tonight we were the bigger team and I thought we did a good job taking advantage of it.”

Junior guard Hannah Christian returned after missing four games with a concussion. She played limited minutes but had three points and two assists.

Best of the West

The Mean Green plays in a pivotal conference matchup on Sunday, traveling to face the Sun Belt West Division-leading Arkansas State University (12-9, 9-3).

The game will be the first of two meetings this season between the rival squads. They will also face each other in the final game of the regular season.

“[We’re going to prepare] the same way we prepared for everyone,” Petersen said. “The fact that we won this game makes that game really big, and now we need to not lose our minds and not ‘over-amp’ and do our job.”

The game tips off at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Jonesboro, Ark.
