The North Texas women’s basketball team was defeated by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 82-70 on Saturday afternoon in the final game of a two-game home stand, extending its losing streak to five games.

The 49ers led for the majority of the game, as the Mean Green got off to a slow start in the first half. The Mean Green was able to mount a second half comeback to grab a lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Charlotte bounced back to hang on for the win.

Charlotte, who came in with the top offense in Conference USA averaging more than 75 points per game, jumped out to a big lead early in the game behind a balanced offensive effort. The 49ers were able to take advantage of seven first quarter turnovers by the Mean Green and converted those mishaps into 14 points.

The Mean Green defense stepped up mightily in the second quarter, as the team held the high-octane Charlotte offense scoreless for nearly four minutes while attempting to mount a comeback. While the defense increased its intensity, junior guard Kelsey Criner and the Mean Green began to find some openings on the offensive side of the ball.

Criner and senior forward Acheil Tac led the Mean Green on two separate runs in the third quarter that helped the team pull within three points going into the fourth, as the veteran duo combined for 12 points in the third frame alone. Despite starting the game on a cold streak, junior guard Candice Adams also got hot at the right time for the Mean Green, hitting a key 3-point shot to tie the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

North Texas grabbed its first lead of the game with under seven minutes remaining, but held that lead for just 35 seconds before Charlotte jumped back on top. The 49ers were a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line, giving them an advantage down the stretch as the Mean Green struggled to fight back.

Criner finished with a game high 25 points, while Tac added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Adams finished with 11 points after bouncing back from the slow start, and senior Kasiney Williams added seven points in just her second start of the season.

The Mean Green have now lost eight of its last 10 games dating back to Jan. 3. The team will now head to Miami, Florida to take on Florida International University on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m.
