The North Texas women’s basketball team defeated La Salle University 69-63 on the road in the second game of a three-game road trip. The win is the Mean Green’s (4-5) second on the road this season and third in the last five games.

The teams were neck and neck throughout the early stages of the first quarter, but a 7-0 run helped the Mean Green establish a 13-6 lead. The Explorers (1-8) responded with a run of its own and shot the ball well as the quarter winded down, evening the score up at 13-13 by the end of the opening frame. Junior guard Candace Adams, the Mean Green’s leading scorer this season, left the quarter early after picking up two quick fouls.

The Mean Green took the court in the second quarter with more authority, going on a 9-2 run to retake the lead. North Texas struggled from the field through the rest of the quarter until Adams drilled a buzzer-beating three pointer, fueling the Mean Green to a 27-19 halftime lead. Both teams shot poorly in the half, with La Salle finishing 31 percent and North Texas finishing 32 percent from the floor. However, the Mean Green was feeling it from deep, draining 5 of 10 three-point shots.

The Explorers slowly but surely chipped away at the Mean Green lead in the third quarter, tying the game up at 35 apiece with 2:42 remaining. North Texas managed to take a slim 39-37 lead into the fourth.

Adams opened the scoring for the Mean Green by drilling her second three pointer of the night to start the fourth quarter. At that point, she had only played six minutes in the game due to foul trouble. North Texas maintained its lead throughout the rest of the quarter, but things got close in the final two minutes.

With 2:10 left, La Salle failed to capitalize on a three pointer that would have cut the deficit to one, leading to an and-one layup on the other end to put the Mean Green up by seven. North Texas shot a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line over the final two minutes to secure the victory.

Senior forward Acheil Tac led the Mean Green in scoring with 21 points and added 11 rebounds to notch her fourth double-double of the season. North Texas had four players grab at least eight rebounds to ignite a dominating 50-27 advantage on the boards.

The Mean Green will end its road trip in San Antonio, Texas on Dec. 21 against the University of the Incarnate Word. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
