Despite a good defensive showing for the Mean Green and a career night for junior guard Terra Ellison, the Mean Green dropped its season opener to the University of San Francisco by 69-61.

After trailing for the first 25 minutes , the Mean Green fought back to take the lead midway through the third, even after trailing by as many as 16. Their effort would fall just short despite Candice Adams’ consistent three-point shooting.

San Francisco jumped out to an 11-0 run in the first, asserting their dominance early. The Dons moved the ball well and made the most of their trips to the free throw line. The Mean Green finally got on the board through a trip to the charity stripe with 5:13 left in the first quarter. Sophomore Teadra Jones made two free-throws to get the Mean Green on the board.

Senior Achiel Tac added to that tally making the score 18-5, and then the third and final scorer of the Mean Green’s first quarter, sophomore Tosin Mabodu, scored and made the following free-throw to make the score 18-8 as the first quarter wound to a close. North Texas shot just 13.3 percent, compared to San Francisco’s 40 percent in the first frame.

The second quarter was less detrimental for the Mean Green’s chances as they clawed back, going back and forth with the Dons. Each team answered each other on the scoresheet as the quarter continued.

North Texas clawed back led by the play of Adams and Ellison, who helped pull the Mean Green within eight with 11 combined first half points. It would be Brooke Jolivette’s three within the dying seconds to pull the Mean Green within eight.

That set the Mean Green up to come out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, which they did. After Adams hit a three with 6:36 to play in the third, Ellison’s jumper from just outside the paint tied the ballgame at 40 after a USF turnover.

Sophomore Bria Frierson would have a chance to take the lead from the free-throw line, and she came up big making both for a 42-41 North Texas lead with 4:44 left in the third, the first North Texas lead of the night. The lead changed in the third seven times. Adams heated up from three, notching nine of her eleven total points in the third form three point range.

North Texas finished the third with the lead by the score of 50-48 but ended up relinquishing that lead in the fourth, spelling their first loss of the season. Zhane Dikes of San Francisco would be fouled and make her free throw from the stripe to give The Dons a 58-54 lead. Dikes led San Francisco with 18 points on the night.

The Dagger came with 4:12 to play as Rachel Howard stepped up and drained her only three point make in five attempts. North Texas could never recover from The Dons’ 21-11 run to finish the game, as North Texas fell 69-61. The team returns to action when they travel to Norman, Oklahoma to face the Sooners of the University of Oklahoma on Monday, Nov. 16.
