After having one of the team’s worst offensive performances of the season on Feb. 4 in a 57-38 loss to the University of Southern Mississippi, the Mean Green women’s basketball team has bounced back well on the offensive side of the court to the tune of a 62.5 point per game average in the last six games.

But while the offense has put up better numbers, the team has still struggled to put together a complete game and come out with consistent wins. North Texas (9-16, 4-11) is just 2-9 in its last 11 games.

The lack of consistency has been a problem for a team that started the season on a high note with a win over then No. 17 Oklahoma University, and comeback wins over Southern Methodist University and Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis.

“It’s definitely frustrating,” junior guard Candice Adams said. “It’s something’s reoccurring. It’s something that we should be able to fix, but it’s definitely adversity and a struggle we have to learn from.”

In the loss to Southern Miss, the Mean Green shot just 15-51 from the field and struggled to overcome the home court advantage the Lady Eagles have boasted throughout the season. Southern Miss is 12-1 at home.

When the Mean Green gets a shot at revenge against the Lady Eagles tomorrow, the home court advantage will be flipped. Although Southern Miss has struggled on the road this season, North Texas hasn’t been able to find a groove at the Super Pit and is just 4-9 at home this season.

At the same time, head coach Jalie Mitchell and her team are still confident in the team’s ability to close out the final home game of the season with a win.

“I think that’s a good thing,” Mitchell said. “When you turn around and play them at home, you have more confidence. We are very confident that we can beat them.”

Based on the team’s play through the parts of the last six games, the Mean Green has reason to be confident in their ability to knock off Southern Miss if they are able to put together a complete game.

The Mean Green is just 1-5 since the loss but have been in a position to win three of those games. North Texas feels as though they have progressed offensively and defensively since putting up just 38 points to Southern Miss at the beginning of the month.

“We bounce back from every loss and come back harder the next game,” junior guard Kelsey Criner said. “We just have to play hard. That’s what it is going to come down to.”

For senior Acheil Tac, bouncing back against the Lady Eagles has a deeper importance. The game will be the final time Tac, along with two other seniors, plays in the Super Pit.

The Mean Green will tip off at 2:00 p.m. Saturday against the Lady Eagles.

“It’s very important,” Tac said. “These are some of my last games in a North Texas uniform, so I want to go out with a win since it’s the last time I’ll play at the Super Pit. That would be very special to me and the other seniors.”
