The Mean Green women’s basketball team extended is still winless after dropping an overtime game to Eastern Illinois University 59-57 at the Super Pit Sunday afternoon.

The Mean Green (0-4) shot 44 percent from the field in the first half to help build a 26-16 halftime lead. Senior guard BreAnna Dawkins scored the first five points of the first half and had eight by halftime, while senior forward Briesha Wynn had 10 points and six rebounds at the break.

“I know I’ve already told this story, but we had control,” head coach Mike Petersen said. “We had complete control of the game.”

The Panthers (1-3) kept chipping away at the lead in the second half and came all the way back to take a 49-48 lead with about 3:50 left to play. The Mean Green trailed 53-50 with about a minute left, but Wynn hit a three that tied the game at 53-53. North Texas then got a stop on defense, but turned the ball over out of a timeout giving it back to the Panthers with 7.7 seconds left in regulation.

The ball went out of bounds on the ensuing Panthers possession, and, after a lengthy review by the officials, it was determined that it would be Mean Green basketball with 2.2 seconds left to play.  However, North Texas couldn’t get a shot off in time which forced the game into overtime.

The Panthers scored the first five points of overtime and had a 58-53 lead with under a minute left to play. Dawkins got the Mean Green’s first points of overtime with a layup to make it a three-point game with 33.8 seconds left.

Adams knocked down two free throws to trim the Panther lead to 58-57 with eight seconds left to play, and the Panthers made one free throw at the other end to extend that lead to 59-57. The Mean Green had the ball with seven seconds left, but Adams missed a potential game-tying layup that sealed the victory for the Panthers.

“If they fall, they fall,” Adams said. “If they don’t, you can’t do anything about it. Just shoot the next shot.”

The Mean Green shot 38.5 percent from the field in the second half, and also couldn’t contain Panthers leading scorer Sabina Oroszova. After being held to just two points in the first half, Oroszova finished the game with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

North Texas was also once again haunted by its struggles from the free throw line. The team made 33.3 percent of its free throws after coming into the game shooting 46.7 percent from the line. The team also ended up being outrebounded 38-35, after edging the Panthers 18-14 on the glass in the first half.

“Like coach said, we didn’t rebound at crucial times and we didn’t make our free throws,” Dawkins said.

Petersen said the team can’t win games if it can’t make free throws, and said it could become a mental hurdle for the squad.

“You’re kidding yourself if you think you can win college basketball games shooting in the 40s,” Petersen said.

The Mean Green will try to get its first win of the season when it takes on Southern Methodist University Dec. 3 on the road. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
