The Mean Green women’s basketball team fell 45-38 to Weber State University in its first game of the Hospitality Hill Tournament. North Texas (2-4) put together a comeback effort in the fourth quarter, but ultimately failed to win consecutive games for the first time in two seasons.

Despite committing nine turnovers in an overall sloppy first quarter, senior forward Acheil Tac fueled the Mean Green to an early 13-6 lead. Tac racked up nine points on 3-3 shooting in the first ten minutes and finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double this season.

Things didn’t improve for either side moving forward. The teams combined for 32 turnovers in the first half, each putting up its lowest point total in a first half all season. Neither team drained a single three-pointer, but a stingy defense that allowed 15.8 percent field goal percentage helped North Texas enter the intermission with a slim 17-15 lead.

But the Wildcats came out of the break firing on all cylinders, putting together a 12-0 run that included two makes from three-point range to snatch a double-digit lead. The deficit remained intact until the end of the frame, when a buzzer-beating three by Weber State capped off a quarter in which it outscored North Texas 21-7.

The Mean Green began to form a comeback as time waned. Thanks to three forced shot chock violations on the defensive end, Mitchell’s squad trailed by only seven with less than five minutes remaining.

Trailing by just three points with 53 seconds to go, North Texas nearly forced a shot-clock violation to have a chance to tie the game. But the opposing shot caught the back of the rim, got corralled and put back up for an easy layup to go up by five. The Mean Green pushed the ball up the court but committed a turnover on a drive to the basket to put the game out of reach.

Just five players scored for North Texas all game, with Tac leading the way and junior guard Candice Adams with nine points on 4-11 shooting.

Next up for the Mean Green is a matchup with Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis at 2:30 on Saturday, concluding the Hospitality Hill Tournament.
