A 13-year run of competing in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament will end this weekend as the Mean Green women’s basketball team begins its final Sun Belt tournament in Hot Springs, Ark.

UNT (11-18, 10-10) – the tournament’s No. 6 seed – is satisfied with its performance headed into the playoffs thanks to an important win to finish the season. The Mean Green topped the No. 4 seed Arkansas State University (15-14, 12-8) in a 53-51 thriller on Feb. 27.

“We feel good about beating a really good team in a close game,” head coach Mike Petersen said. “We had to make a lot of plays down the stretch of that game to win it.”

The win snapped a three-game losing streak and helped the Mean Green gather momentum for its opening game tomorrow against the No. 11 University of Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (9-20, 3-17).

“I think it gave us confidence headed into the tournament,” junior guard Laura McCoy said. “We’re just trying to work hard so we can win as many games as we can.”

UNT has already defeated ULL twice this season. The Ragin’ Cajuns hold the lowest ranking in the tournament, but Petersen plays down the effect of his team’s opponent while emphasizing the importance of his own team’s play.

“I’m focused on us,” Petersen said. “We’ll play whoever comes up next. I think you have to go into these tournaments more focused on you than on anyone else. It’s not like you reinvent the wheel in the tournament, you’ve got to be more concerned about how you’re playing.”

The game against ULL tips off at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Summit Arena. Should UNT win, the team would face No. 3 seed Western Kentucky (20-9, 13-7) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

“Every game’s going to be a big game,” freshman guard Loryn Goodwin said. “It doesn’t matter who we’re playing in this league, everyone’s about the same. We’re more focused because the game coming up is a big game.”
