Women’s basketball seeks another road win

After losing back-to-back games at home, the Mean Green hits the road to take on the University of Lousiana-Monroe on Thursday for a chance to break its losing streak.
Most teams see more success when playing on home turf, but the Mean Green (9-15, 8-7) is an exception. Four straight losses at home have been offset by victories in four of the last five road games.
“We have no clue why we’re better on the road,” freshman forward Alexis Hyder said. “That’s the mystery question, and it’s just going to take some growth.”
Although ULM (7-16, 5-9) is ranked fourth in the Sun Belt West Division, the team has developed momentum after winning four of its last five games.
UNT beat ULM by a large difference in their first meeting this year, 79-51.
“When we played them, we beat them so bad, we really disrupted them with our press,” head coach Mike Petersen said. “I don’t think that’s a very accurate reflection of who they are as a team. They’ve got very good athletes, and when they get going in transition, they’re very good.”
Junior guard Laura McCoy also gave credit to ULM for its fast-paced tempo.
“They attack the basket really well,” McCoy said. “They play aggressive defense so we have to take care of the ball.”
After two straight losses and only five conference games remaining, this game is paramount for the Mean Green to have a chance to catch Sun Belt West Division-leading Arkansas State University (13-11, 10-5).
“If you win, you feel like you’re playing well, and if you lose, you ought to have a sense of desperation,” Petersen said. “This group has been really focused, that hasn’t really been a problem. And it’s not like we’re going on the road where we haven’t had any success. I think our players feel very comfortable playing on the road.”
UNT is on the verge of snapping one school record in this game. For this season, the team has made 134 three-pointers, tied with the 2001-02 team for the most ever. The Mean Green average 5.6 three-pointers per game.
The game will tip off at 5:15 p.m. at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
